How to play the snake game

Guide the snake around the board and eat the sushi. Every piece makes the snake one block longer and adds a point. The snake speeds up a little each time it eats, so the game starts relaxed and slowly turns into a real test of reflexes. You lose if the head hits your own body, or, in walls mode, the edge of the board.

On a computer use the arrow keys or W, A, S, D. Press Space or P to pause. On a phone, swipe anywhere on the board, or use the on-screen arrow pad under the game. Turns are buffered, so a quick double swipe (for example up then left) is remembered and played on the next two steps.

Power-ups

After every fifth sushi a power-up appears for a few seconds. It blinks before it disappears, so move fast.

Walls or no walls?

Walls mode is the classic rule: touch the border and the run ends. No-walls mode lets the snake wrap around and appear on the opposite side, which is great for beginners and for long runs. Each mode keeps its own best score, saved only in your browser.

Tips to get a higher score

Keep the snake close to the edges and move in long, tidy lines instead of chasing food diagonally. Leave an open path back to your tail, because the tail is the one space that always becomes free. Save ghost and slow-mo for the late game when the snake is long. In walls mode, never turn toward a wall when the food is right next to it; approach it along the wall instead.

A short history

Snake grew out of the 1976 arcade game Blockade and became famous worldwide when it was pre-installed on mobile phones in the late 1990s. The idea has stayed the same ever since: one direction at a time, one more block per meal, and no way back. This version keeps that simple core and adds a few modern touches.
